How we make money

Short version: when you buy gear through our links, the retailer may pay us a commission. You pay the retailer's normal price. That commission is this site's only planned revenue.

The arrangement, in plain English

Juniata Fishing Company is a recommendation service, not a store. We hold no inventory, process no payments, and ship no packages. When our Gear Finder or an outfit page points you at a product, the link goes to an independent retailer — primarily Trident Fly Fishing, with other established shops where they carry something Trident doesn't.

These retailers run affiliate programs. If you click one of our links and then make a qualifying purchase within the program's attribution window, the retailer pays us a percentage of the sale — typically in the range of 6–10% for fly-fishing retailers. The retailer, not Juniata, sets the price you pay, along with stock, shipping, warranty, and returns.

The recommendation policy

Juniata ranks products according to your stated fishing needs, compatibility, budget, and documented performance — not affiliate commission. Products with higher commissions receive no preferential recommendation. Sponsored placements, if we ever accept them, will be clearly labeled and will never be inserted into personalized recommendations.

Concretely, that policy has teeth because of how the Gear Finder is built: it is a fixed decision table, not a sales tool that can be tuned. Five answers select one of nine outfits that were curated in the open — each outfit page shows every product, its approximate price, our reasoning, and the compromises we accepted. The same answers always produce the same result, whether or not a commission is attached.

How we label evidence

Gear writing is full of borrowed conviction. Ours carries labels. When we describe a product, the claim comes from one of these sources, and we say which:

LabelWhat it means
Manufacturer specA measurable claim from the maker (weight, materials, warranty). Reported, not endorsed.
Community consensusA view held broadly across reviews, shop staff, and experienced anglers — cited as consensus, not as our test.
Editorial judgmentOur own reasoning from specifications, comparable gear, and fishing experience in general — flagged as opinion.
Field notesSomething we have personally fished or handled. As of July 2026, we are just getting started — so you will see this label rarely, and never falsely.

We will never write "we've fished this rod for years" about a rod we haven't, and we won't invent enthusiasm ("anglers love it!") without a source. If a product on our list is one we know only on paper, the page says so.

What would make us drop a product

A pattern of warranty problems, a quiet spec downgrade, a better option at the same price, or repeated stock unavailability. Commission changes are not on that list — a product doesn't get removed for paying us less, and doesn't get added for paying us more.

Prices and freshness

Prices shown on this site are approximate, last checked on July 25, 2026. Retail prices move; the retailer's page is always the truth. Where a price is our estimate rather than a checked figure, it is marked with an asterisk.

The disclosure you'll see everywhere

Per FTC guidance, we put the disclosure with the recommendation, not buried on this page alone. Above every set of retailer buttons you'll find:

Juniata may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page. Recommendations are ranked by suitability for your fishing, never by commission.

Questions we expect

Does buying through your links cost me more?

You pay the retailer's listed price either way. Affiliate commissions are paid by the retailer out of their margin. If we ever encounter a program where following our link could affect what you pay, we'll say so on the recommendation itself.

Why one main retailer?

Because a complete outfit from a single shop means one checkout, one shipment, one returns desk, and one place to call. Splitting a $500 order across four stores to optimize each piece is a worse experience for you — so we don't do it.

Are you affiliated with the retailers editorially?

No. Retailers do not review, approve, or see our recommendations before you do. They find out what we recommended the same way we hope they do: from orders.
